Where and when: Newfoundland, Canada, August 2025
Newfoundland has been on my travel radar ever since it was the backdrop to the finale of Race Across the World Finale Series 3. When a relative moved there for higher education, visiting Newfoundland was a no-brainer.
I arrived in the Western Newfoundland at Deer Lake Airport (2.5 hrs flying time from Toronto). It was small, but one of the most relaxed airports I have been to.
I took a taxi from the airport to Cornerbrook, where I was staying at the Glynmill Inn. This hotel dates back to 1924, when it was built as staff quarters for the nearby paper mill. It was opened as a hotel in 1925.
Being one of the oldest surviving buildings here, Glynmill Inn has been given landmark status in Newfoundland. It looked like many buildings in the UK and I loved the ‘Tudor-revival’ facade. Staff were very welcoming and I would recommend staying here if you are in this part of the World.
The hotel is right next to the Glynmill Inn Pond and the surrounding park, which has many great walking trails.
We spent the afternoon exploring the park and the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, which is in Cornerbrook.
Over the next 3 days, we’ll be taking a road trip across Newfoundland; a total of 690km, from Cornerbrook on the West to St John’s on the East Coast. More on that in the next few posts.

I’m eager to read about this area of Canada. On a recent podcast, the Husband sprang a road trip idea on me that involved just this area of Canada. I admit, my response was tepid. Maybe I need some educating before I judge it. Please proceed… 🙂
