Who are you?
Hello. I’m Upeksha, a thirty-something engineering professional, born and raised in Sri Lanka. I moved to Birmingham, UK when I was 16 years old and have lived here ever since.
Why do you blog?
The idea to start this blog came 4 years ago, after we got burgled. We lost many valuables in that incident, but the most precious was my laptop, containing 10 years worth of photos. All of a sudden, all I had to show for 10 years worth of memories were photos I had uploaded to social media, and my handwritten journals from my travels. This got me thinking. Why not start a blog to keep a record of my travels, photos and notes both? So, the Diary of a Tourist was born.
What do you write about?
About places I visit. I like to write about the day as I experience it, warts and all. I love visiting new places, sight-seeing and taking lots of (not very good) photos. With a full-time job, my travel is limited to holiday and weekends, so I try to make the most of every opportunity. I travel as far and as wide as my budget allows, but I try to share some local knowledge about Sri Lanka and Birmingham as well (but I must admit, I don’t do it as often as I should!)
How is this different to every other travel blog?
It isn’t, probably. The main difference is that I write it as a diary, rather than centring my posts around different attractions. So, if you want to find out what is like to spend a day in the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland, drive down the Icefields Parkway in Canada or how to spend a day in Xian, China you’re in the right place.
