A Slice of Scotland: Road Trip Itinerary and Highlights

Where and When: Scotland, UK, May 2024.

We recently took a 5 day trip to Scotland. Detailed posts are coming up, but in the meantime, here is the itinerary and some highlights.

Welcome to Scotland!

Day 1: Drive up to Oban from the Midlands. On the way, we stopped off at Loch Lomond for lunch.

Lunch stop at Loch Lomond

Oban is a small sea side town on the West Coast of Scotland. It is the jumping off point for many of the Inner Hebridian Islands.  Although it was a long drive (and long day), I’m glad to have done it as we had an early start from Oban the next morning.

Day 2: Day Trip to Isles of Mull, Iona and Staffa with West Coast Tours (seperate post coming up).

Isle of Staffa and Fingal’s Cave

Day 3: Exploring the Scottish Highlands.  We visited the Glenfinnian rail viaduct – famous for its 21 arches and for being in the Harry Potter films. We were also lucky enough to see the steam train go over the viaduct on all its glory.

From Glenfinnan, we headed to the Cairngorms via Glencoe.  The evening was spent at Dalmunzi Castle – a pretty little Scottish Castle with great staff and food (Including whisky porridege for breakfast!).

Day 4: Visit to Balmoral Castle and then on to Ediburgh. (Detailed post coming up).

Day 5: Return trip, with a small detour to the Lake District village of Keswick.

I will write details blog posts about the trip in the coming weeks.
